Thurs, February 7  – Tour of Austin’s New Central Library

Austin completed the construction of its new central library on Oct. 28, 2017 at a cost of $125 million! Located on Cesar Chavez Street, overlooking Town Lake, it really is something to experience. Please consider joining us for a docent led tour of this state-of-the-art facility that is so much more than just about books.

We will have lunch at the library’s café, Cookbook. The eatery offers menu items made from recipes in the library’s collection of cookbooks, with specialties by local chefs.  You can even purchase a glass of wine to have with your lunch.

If weather permits, we will end our excursion with a brief visit to The Cathedral of Junk or the Overlook at Mount Bonnell.

Transportation will be by carpool, meeting in the parking lot behind the Scholtzsky’s at 5105 Balcones Woods Drive and Research Blvd. We will be leaving at 10:00 AM sharp and will return by 3:00 PM. The library places a limit of 15 people per tour group, so if you are interested in joining us for this informative and festive affair, please contact Dolores Z. to reserve your spot.

Thurs, March 7  – Tour of the Harry Ransom Center on the UT Campus

The Ransom Center is renowned as an archive, library and museum.  Its current exhibit concerns The Rise of Everyday Design: The Arts and Crafts Movement.  Arts and Crafts reformers were concerned with the daily realities of the industrial age and used design to envision and promote a new and improved way of living. Discover how Arts and Crafts objects, which were originally handmade and costly, came to be manufactured and sold to the everyday consumer.

Our member, Sharon H., is a docent at the Ransom Center and conducts many public tours. However, on March 7th, she will be giving us a customized private tour.  All I can add is, she is a great, great tour guide!

Lunch will be at the Eastside Café – they grow their own veggies, serving simple, seasonal food in a bungalow.

Transportation will be by carpool, meeting in the parking lot behind the Scholtzsky’s at 5105 Balcones Woods Drive and Research Blvd. We will be leaving at 10:00 AM sharp and will return by 3:00 PM.
